Get to know the Attendance policy.
On the first day of school, every student will be issued a copy of The Key, Millville High School's student handbook. It is important to become familiar with the attendance policies outlined in The Key in an effort to avoid any of the negative consequences associated with being frequently absent or late to school or with discipline issues. School rules, including the dress code, are also outlined in the student handbook. Again, please become familiar with these policies before starting your freshman year.

BECOME FAMILIAR WITH THE GRADING SCALE.
Departmental grading policies include assigned homework, class participation, test grades, projects, and other relevant course work. Each department has their own break down regarding how each category will be weighted. The district’s grading scale will be used when calculating grades. Teachers will use percentage grades (numerical averages) for each marking period. The final grade for the school year will be determined by the numerical average grade for each marking period plus a final examination grade.
Learn how your final grades are calculated.
Your final grade, per course, is calculated based on a percentage system. Each marking period grade is worth 40% of your final grade. Final exams are worth 20% of your final grade. Final grades will be calculated twice a year - at the end of each semester, after final exams have been administered.
Marking Period 1 & 3 = 40%
Marking Period 2 & 4 = 40%
Final Exams = 20%
For example, if you earned an 85 first marking period, a 70 second marking period, and a 68 on the final exam, you would calculate your grade as follows:
85 x .4 = 34
70 x .4 = 28
68 x .2 = 13.6
34+28+13.6 = 75.6 (rounded up to 76)
76 "C" WOULD BE YOUR FINAL GRADE FOR THE COURSE
It is very important to keep track of your grades throughout each semester. Also, don't forget that your final exam counts for 20% of your overall grade. It is very important to study for final exams, especially if you are on the borderline between two grades.
ALSO NOTE, if you teacher offers a mid-term exam, your mid-term will count for 10% and your final exam will count for 10% of your final grade.

GET TO KNOW YOUR SCHEDULE
Your final schedule will be mailed out a few weeks before you start the new school year. When you get a copy of your schedule, take a look at it. Become familiar with the classes you chose and the names of your new teachers. Memorial High School operates on a block schedule. Each semester, students take four 84 minute classes. Here is an example of a typical freshman schedule:
A/B Schedules
Certain courses are also paired on an A/B schedule. For those courses, students will be attending an "A" and a "B" course every other day for the entire school year. For example, if you are a 9th grade AVID student and that course is paired with a World History class, on "A" days you might attend history class and on "B" days you would attend your AVID class throughout the course of the whole year. If you do have an A/B schedule, it is important to listen to morning announcements every day to make sure you are attending the correct classes. It is announced whether we are on an "A" or "B" schedule. It alternates every other day. Here is an example of a typical freshman A/B schedule
Know what classes you need to take.

In order for you to become a sophomore, you must earn a minimum of 25 credits. When you fail a class, you DO NOT earn credits for that class and as a result, you must retake the class if it is a REQUIRED course. most classes require taking notes.
If you are not familiar with the Cornell note-taking system, it is a good idea to become familiar with this process. The Cornell note-taking system was developed by Walter Pauk at Cornell University in the 1950's. This system has been adopted by the AVID Program and is widely used throughout Millville Public Schools. The diagram below outlines how to organize a plain sheet of notebook paper when taking Cornell notes. It also provides a number of tips for success when in school. Below you will also find a video tutorial that breaks down the Cornell note-taking process.
